Lonsdale Quay: Dylan
This harbour feature, Lonsdale Quay is special because there are fresh food markets and plenty of multi-cultural restaurants. This is also where you can catch the Seabus to Vancouver. It was built in April 1986 because we hosted the World Expo. It was used as a carnival type market place. This feature is important because it’s the northern connection to the sea bus. It offers another way to get from the north shore to Vancouver by sea bus. We use the hotel and market and it is a tourist attraction.
If this feature were not there it would impact traffic because it would cut off the connection to Vancouver. Also the people who live by Lonsdale Quay would have to go farther away to shop. In the future I think this feature would have 2 sea buses and a sky train as well as a lot more stores. If there were more stores that would mean more people.
That’s why I think Lonsdale Quay is important.

Stanley PArk: MAtteo
Stanley Park is really special because it’s known for its famous seawall and its beautiful gardens
and parks. In 1809 Lord Stanley wanted to start to make a park called Stanley Park and the grand opening
was in 1888. We use this feature for exercising enjoying playing biking and lots more! Stanley Park is
important for helping cars going to downtown and leaving downtown. If this feature wasn't here nobody would have access to the seawall to do their activities or enjoy in the beautiful gardens of Stanley Park. In the future this feature will change with the art on the seawall and I think they would add more stuff to the parks.

New Brighton PArk: Brook-Lynn
New Brighton Park was established in 1863 but the areas name used to be “Hastings Townsite” to honour Admiral Hastings of the British Navy. In 1880 the name was changed to New Brighton Park because of the hotel that was built there and it was known as the new “Brigton House”. Some special features about the harbour are as follows; off leash dog area, tennis courts, playgrounds, soccer fields, walking trails and beaches, and the primary attraction is a large outdoor heated pool and surrounding picnic grounds. For local residents, New Brighton Park provides a number of popular things to do.
New Brighton Park is one of the many locations in Vancouver, Burnaby, and New Westminster, that sewage outflow occurs. This system was built in the 1960’s and it combines sewer and rain water together. The reason this system was built was because it is cheaper to build and easier to maintain. It is usually not a problem but if we have large amounts of rain water the system will overflow. In most cases the pipe is under water so the people cannot see it.
It has recently been said that the combined sewer system will be affected with the climate change. It has been said that rainfalls will increase with climate change and this could cause more water to be routed into the ocean. For this reason, Vancouver has committed to change the combined system by 2050. This means that rain water collected from streets and houses would be directed to the ocean and the sewer would be processed by a sewage treatment plant.
In conclusion, updating the sewer systems would be better for our environment. Also maintaining and updating the attractions would allow people to enjoy the park for many years to come.

Mosquito Creek Marina: Raya
In 1967 Frank Rivers, The first manager at MOSQUITO CREEK MARINA helped the Squamish Nation take over the marina from the Harbour control board. The MOSQUITO CREEK MARINA was initially built for the purpose of storing boats but has more recently become home to many floating homes. It is used as a moorage and storage for boats and ships and also a repair yard for boats and ships.
MOSQUITO CREEK MARINA has also gained popularity as a tourist spot and walking trail in the North Shore and brings significant revenue to the North Shore through boat shows and other events. It has also become a shipyard where ships are brought in for storage and repair.

Seaspan: Bella
My Harbour Feature is the Seaspan.
The Seaspan is important because that is where they build and fix ships. The Seaspan is special because it’s a big part of the Vancouver Harbour. Without the Seaspan, our city may not be as rich, so if the Seaspan isn’t here, it would be cause a big impact on us. The Vancouver Shipyards is a part of the Seaspan. If we didn’t have the Seaspan we wouldn’t have a place to build and fix the ships, it provides work for a lot of people. Also no one will supply bunkers and no one will do the coastal and deep sea transportations. I think the Seaspan will be even bigger in the future.
Some facts about the Seaspan are, they might shoot the pirates of the Caribbean there, and Seaspan just got a military ship contract.

Seaspan: Miles
Seaspan is Canadian company with its head office in the North Vancouver harbor involved in marine transportation, repairs, and shipbuilding. It was put into service in 1970 in the port of North Vancouver to provide marine related services to the Pacific Northwest. Seaspan is run by Dennis Washington’s son Kyle Washington as the executive Chairman, as a division of the Washington family empire. Kyle Washington was formally from Montana and is now recently a Canadian Citizen.
Seaspan includes three businesses. These include; a shipyard for building, repairing and customizing boats. There is also an Intermodal Ferry business for operating ferries between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island carrying semi trailer trucks and containers. A third business of tug and barge transportation to haul forest materials, railcars or trains, machinery and fuel.
Seaspan takes up about 7800square meters of real estate on the North Shore water front. The company employs hundreds of thousands of workers including skilled immigrants. If Seaspan did not operate in North Vancouver, there would be more available real estate for other ventures including waterfront housing and other businesses. There would also be less traffic and chances of pollution from the transportation of containers and damaged vessels on the North Shore harbor. Without Seaspan there would not be such mass employment availabilities, less income and less of a diverse multicultural environment in North Vancouver.

Mosquito Creek: Ry
Mosquito Creek Marina is a special harbour feature of Burrard Inlet because it is both a working marina and a residential neighborhood.
Mosquito Creek Marina was established in 1967. People park their boats at the marina which is important because people with boats need a place to park them.
They also use this feature for jobs and homes. If the Mosquito Creek Marina was not there, people wouldn’t be able to work and live there. Also people wouldn’t be able to park their boats there. The Mosquito Creek Marina will probably expand around the residential areas and the docks.

Grain Terminals: Ella
Grain terminals unload grain from trains into long cylinder tubes (called silos) that holds up to 2000 tonnes. After the grain is loaded into ships and it goes to all around the world. The boats body is half red and half black, so they know how much grain to put into the boat. When the water goes over the red it means to stop.
CONTAINER PORT: Mobed
The cranes lift up to 65 tons and the cranes are 137m and 450ft. The cranes lift up goods like coal, sulphur etc. It has 400,000 car product. Most of the cargo is forest product. The port can take cargo and more. 98,800 jobs are given.
BCIT MArine Campus: Lakshmi
The BCIT Marine Campus allows individuals to train and become certified to have careers in the marine field. The Marine Campus is very special because it is one of the two largest marine training institutes in Canada. It’s also the only one of its kind in Western Canada. The BCIT Marine Campus was formerly known as the Pacific Marine Training Institute (PMTI). The BCIT Marine Campus is approximately 35-37 years old. The PMTI was handed over to BCIT in 1996 and has been running as the BCIT Marine Campus since then.
Some of the programs that are taught at the Marine Campus are: Safety Training and First Aid, Bridge Watchmen program, Deck and Engine Cadet program, Domestic Master Ticket, Oil Tanker and Supervisor of Oil Transfer Operations, Ship and Port Security courses, Simulator training, Electronic Navigator, Dynamic Positioning and Radio Course, Chief Mate and Watch Keeping Mate programs. It has several simulators to teach real experience. Some of the simulators are the liquid cargo holding simulator, ship station simulator, electric chart simulator, and the radio engine simulator.
If the BCIT Marine campus was not located here in BC, people wanting a career in the marine industry would have to travel to Eastern Canada for education and training. Vancouver is a very large port, if we didn’t have access to this local training facility the lack of knowledge and training could potentially affect the handling of marine life rescues on the water, security of our port, management and clean up oil spills, tanker ship, cruise ship and recreational boat management.
Due to the rapidly growing Port of Vancouver and its marine traffic, the BCIT Marine Institute already uses state of the art simulators that were introduced into the program in 2010. In the future, the institute may offer more courses and certifications along with more types of simulators to give a real teaching hands on learning experience. The average enrollment at any given time is approximately 200-300 students, this may definitely increase as demands of the Port of Vancouver increase.

Seabus: Caleb
The sea bus is used for taking people from North Vancouver, across the harbour and into Vancouver. It can carry around 400 people at a time and it only takes about 12-15 minutes. The Sea bus was built in 1976 and started operating in June 1977. The sea bus is used for transportation and it does about 50 crossings a day and about 350 crossings a week. If the sea bus did not exist there would be less transportation and more cars so the roads would be busier and crowded and because of that there would be more pollution in the environment from the cars driving back and forth. In the future, the sea bus might be upgraded, bigger, might build more
sea buses and maybe they will eventually do tours of the Vancouver harbour.
sea buses and maybe they will eventually do tours of the Vancouver harbour.
HArbour Air: Sian
I am studying the Vancouver Harbour Seaplanes. The seaplanes are used for transport, commercial, and recreational uses. The seaplanes are very important for some people because without them some people on islands, like Saltspring Island, would only get mail about once a month (that is my guess). The seaplanes are also important because for some people, (like people on Saltspring Island) because they can’t get to anywhere else, or the seaplanes are just used to get to places quickly. So in conclusion, the seaplanes are a very nice part of downtown Vancouver.
New Brighton Park: Colin
Our class has started a socials study on certain landmarks around Vancouver harbour. I chose New Brighton Park! New Brighton Park is found right behind Play land/PNE and includes of a soccer pitch, tennis courts, barbecue picnic, two playgrounds, beaches, and an outdoor swimming pool! This is an urban park of 10.0 hectares a pretty beautiful place if you ask me! If we didn’t have the park it would result in recreational loss for pets and people.
There is also a downside of this lovely or not so lovely park. There’s a sewage outflow problem. Vancouver’s sewage system was built in 1960 and organized so the sewage is mixed with the rainwater collector this is known as a combined sewer system. The reason of this is because it’s cheaper and easier to maintain. I really think Vancouver should make a new and improved sewer system that avoids combined sewers.

Seaspan: Tom
Seaspan claims to be North Americas most modern shipyard. It started in 1902. There is a big crane witch is the most eye-catching feature in the shipyard. In the shipyard the people that work there build and repair ships from the size of fishing boats and coast guard ships to ferries and container ships. The big blue crane can lift up to 300 tonnes. The big blue crane is a gantry crane and was nicknamed the Big Blue. The Big Blue is the largest crane in North America. There is a 20 2000 square foot paint shed and also a very large dry dock.
Iron Workers Memorial Bridge: Aidan
The original Second Narrows was the first bridge connecting North Vancouver to Vancouver. It was constructed in 1925, this bridge was constructed by John Stewart and Northern construction. In 1926 they added a train track after the bridge was hit by a number of ships which caused the bridge to be out of service for 4 years. In 1933 the provincial government bought the bridge and installed a lift section to the bridge. Construction started on the new bridge and the old one then was just for rail use.
The new Iron workers Memorial or Second Narrows bridge is part of highway 1. It is a six lane cantilever bridge. It crosses Burrard inlet connecting North Vancouver and Vancouver. It is 1292 meters long, which is the second longest cantilever bridge in Canada and the 15th longest cantilever in the world. It carries 117 800 cars on average per day. Construction started in 1957, part way through the construction on June 17 1958 part of the bridge collapsed killing 19 people. It was opened on August 25 1960. When it was first opened there was a toll which lasted 3 years before it was removed. The bridge was designed by Swan Wooster Engineering Co. The cost of the bridge was about 15 million dollars to complete.

Seaspan: Lucas
After my dad went to the Seaspan tower and took photos from the top of the crane, I wanted to learn more about this site. Seaspan is known for many things, but the most important thing is building and repairing ships. They have a dry dock, a location where ships drive in and the water can be drained out, so they can be repaired easier. They also have a crane that can lift 300 tons which is handy for lifting things like tankers and ferries. Seaspan also has a barge and tug service which helps guide and push tankers through the inlet. Seaspan has grown a great deal since it was opened in 1969, but because of the huge development in the area it is located, it isn’t likely that it can grow much more. Without Seaspan being located where it is, we would not be able to repair ships locally, and it would cost huge amounts of money to send them out to another company for repair.
Seabus: Capri
The Seabus can carry up to 400 people at a time. It only takes 12 - 15 minutes to travel from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay. The Seabus travels over 50 crossings transporting over 16,000 people a day.
The Seabus was built n 1976 and started operating in June 17th 1977. The Seabus had three different looks over the years and was originally introduced in a highly visible orange colour. in 1986 they painted them to match Expo 86. Today the new colours are white red and blue.
We use the Seabus to commute from Vancouver via Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. The distance travelled is 3.24 km. they travel at a speed of 13.5 kilometres per hour. We use the Seabus as transportation, instead of driving over the Lionsgate Bridge or Second Narrows Bridge. I we didn't have a Seabus the roads would be a lot more crowded and it would cause more pollution to our environment. The Seabus can travel in either direction without turning around and is built on a catamarans which at the time were very rare design.
There are future plans to develop the North Vancouver Lonsdale Quay site and system to integrate the two intermodal transit does (bus and Seabus) making it easier for people and tourists to use.

Lonsdale quay: Charlotte
Lonsdale Quay is very important because it helps us with our daily needs. Lonsdale Quay is located in Vancouver Harbour. Lonsdale Quay was opened on April 12, 1986 as a carnival style marketplace and opened Expo 86 Vancouver. I think Lonsdale Quay is a special market because it has fresh food markets that sell local products. They also have festivals and community events to make sure no two visits are the same! This feature is important because they have a hotel to stay in and people can dine for dinner. It can be a shelter for some people. Others can get their daily items there. The impact that would be there if Lonsdale Quay wasn't there would be that people would have to travel further for shopping and tourists couldn't enjoy the views. My change in the future for Lonsdale Quay would be the buildings will be built a little bit higher so more shops could fit in. Also in my the middle of the Quay there could be a day care so when parents go shopping they can drop off there kids at the day care. People should take care of Lonsdale Quay because it's not going to be here forever so let's use it and take care of it while we can!
canada place: Alaina
Canada Place is a very special place on the downtown Vancouver Harbor.
The harbor feature was built 30 years ago and opened May 2nd 1986 for Expo 86, as the Canadian Pavilion and hosted more than 5 million visitors during Expo 86. The Canadian Pavilion has been acknowledged as one of the best ever host nation Pavilions at a world exposition! The Pavilion was converted into the Vancouver Trade and Convention Center in 1987 and turned over to the province of British Columbia as a long lasting legacy for Canadians to enjoy.
The things that are special about Canada Place are, it is a multi-purpose waterfront building where both locals and tourists can access and enjoy the harbor. Every day the sails are illuminated from dusk till dawn. Also at Canada Place there is something called the Heritage Horns and they sound the first four notes of Canada’s national anthem every day at noon. Canada Place also does fireworks every once in awhile, like on one of its birthdays and on New Years Eve and some other special events.
We use this feature as a hotel, a restaurant, cruise ship terminals, a Convention Center and a place to display art.
If this feature was not here, there would be one less place for cruise ships to dock, one less place to stay in and one less place for families to get together.
In my opinion, in the future I think Canada Place will expand and continue to host fun events.

CanADA PLACE: STRYDER
CONVENTION CENTRE: LALEH
The Vancouver Convention Centre located at Canada Place, on the Vancouver Harbour, is an important part of the Vancouver community. One of the reasons the Convention Center is so important is because it hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics! It is one of Canada’s largest convention centers. It also has 20 meeting rooms, 220 500 square feet of convention space, 440 parking stalls, a cruise ship terminal, the Pan Pacific hotel, and a ballroom! Surrounding the building there are walkways, bikeways, public open space, and plazas. The Original Building (the East building) was opened in 1986. Then they expanded and added the West side, on April 4th 2009.
There are many uses for the Convention Centre such as, private events, trade shows, and award ceremonies. If the Convention Centre was not where it is today people would have to find different places to do these events, which would impact the community, because less people would go to that part of Vancouver. I think the Convention Centre may expand in the future. It also might be used for more recreational and kid friendly opportunities. Some opportunities may be: a swimming pool, an ice rink, and a garden. These are only some of the reasons why I think the Vancouver Convention Centre is such a cool, awesome, and interesting place.

CONVENTION CENTRE: JACKSON
The Convention Center is special because it has a 6 acre green roof that holds 400 000 different indigenous plants and grasses making it the largest green roof in Canada. The East building (now called Canada Place) was completed in 1986 for Expo 86. The West building, which is my topic, was completed in 2009. The Convention Center is used primarily for conventions and large gatherings. A convention is a large, organized meeting of people interested in the same thing where there are usually large displays and booths of a specific topic (example; The Auto Show). The Convention Centre is also important because when people come to Vancouver for conventions they spend money on hotel rooms, restaurants and other shopping which brings money to the Vancouver economy.
If the Convention Center didn’t exist it would affect the economy in a negative way because if people didn’t come to Vancouver for conventions, they wouldn’t spend money at local businesses. In my opinion, there is an opportunity to extend the cruise ship dock to the West building. This might bring more cruise ships to Vancouver in the future, resulting in more people spending money in town. The Convention Center is a really cool building, I hope I get to see the inside one day.

BCIT MARINE CAMPUS: RONIK
IRON WORKERS MEMORIAL BRIDGE: CHLOE
My Vancouver harbour feature is the Second Narrows Bridge.
The Second Narrows Bridge is important because it’s a bridge between Vancouver and North Vancouver, and is used for transportation.
One special fact about the Second Narrows Bridge is that it collapsed while they were still building it in 1958.
After its collapse, the Second Narrows Bridge was finally built in 1968, and was soon put in use in 1969.
If the Second Narrows was never built there would be more traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge, and it would take much longer to get downtown or up north.
The Second Narrows Bridge might change in the future because it is getting older and it might rust or even collapse again, or the government might want to make it bigger as the population grows.
And that’s some facts about the Second Narrows Bridge!

SEASPAN: NAOMI
My harbour feature is Seaspan. Seaspan is a group of Canadian companies involved in coastal and deepsea transportation, bunkering, ship repairing and ship building services.
The Vancouver Shipyards is a part of Seaspan. It was originally incorporated in 1902, moved from the shores of Downtown Vancouver to it’s present 40 acre custom-built facility on the North Shore of the Burrard Inlet at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
The Seaspan is very important. It is very important because if a ship is damaged, and Seaspan was not there, then the ship may never get repaired. If more and more ships get damaged and no one is fixing them, then in the end, there will be no more ships left. No one will build more new ships, no one will supply bunkers, and no one will do the coastal and deepsea transportations. Seaspan is also a big part of the Vancouver Harbour.
Without Seaspan, our city may not be as rich, so if Seaspan isn’t here, it would cause a big impact on us.
Although, maybe there could be more places with Seaspan in the future, or maybe there could be more jobs (But, honestly, there are already quite a lot of jobs going on in Seaspan right now) in the future.

Although, maybe there could be more places with Seaspan in the future, or maybe there could be more jobs (But, honestly, there are already quite a lot of jobs going on in Seaspan right now) in the future.
CONTAINER PORTS: LUCAS
My harbor feature is the Vancouver container port. Something that is special about the container port is that ships from all over the world visit here. The Vancouver container port is the closest port to Asia and easily accessible via water. The goods that are being shipped to places that are far away are loaded onto trains are removed from the ships using gantry cranes. The goods that are being shipped locally are removed from the ships using smaller cranes and put onto trucks.
The containers that we received are full of all different kinds of consumer goods, such as cars, televisions, cell phones, furniture and products that are stocked in dollar stores. The containers that we ship out are full of raw materials.
We use the Vancouver container port to transport goods to different places, which then make them accessible to people like ourselves. If we didn’t have this container port it would be very hard for us to transfer goods to different places in the world. If this container port wasn’t built, we would have to carry cardboard boxes onto ships. That is strenuous work that takes a lot of time.
The Vancouver container port has made it much easier to make sure goods are available to consumers around the world. Without the rapid delivery of these goods, life would be much more difficult for the average person

STANLEY PARK: MIA
Stanley Park is very interesting. It can be a wonderful place but can also be full of secrets. For example, there is a mysterious murder of two boys in the woods. It’s called “Babes in the Woods”. It is also home to wild animals such as squirrels, raccoons and coyotes. Stanley Park has beautiful beaches, over a hundred year old trees and is home to the Vancouver Aquarium which is a very beautiful place. The first people to discover the land were the Musqueam and Squamish First Nations but Lord Frederick Stanley was the one to claim it as Stanley Park on September 27th, 1888. It was to build “hopes and dreams of citizens” and for “active sport or peaceful relaxation” (www.vancouver.ca).
Stanley Park is very important because we still need some greenery in Vancouver so that animals still have a home. It also a beautiful place to enjoy and an area for people to exercise and we need the trees for fresh air. We always need Nature. We need Stanley Park because we need to balance the buildings.

LIONS GATE BRIDGE: BRUCE
The Lions Gate Bridge is one of the many features Vancouver Harbour has to offer. We use it for transportation and it is important because it is one of the two ways to get from North Van to Vancouver. It is also important because it is a National Historic Site of Canada. It is one of British Columbia’s busiest bridges with 60 to 70 thousand cars and trucks using it every day. It is special because it was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada on March 24, 2005 and the two stone lions on either side of the Stanley Park entrance are very valuable art pieces. It is also special because until 1963 there was a toll of 25 cents to use it.
If the Lions Gate Bridge wasn’t there, it would be bad because there would be a lot more traffic congestion on the Second Narrows because the people would have to use one bridge instead of two. Also there would be no easy way from North Van to Stanley Park because you would have to take the Second Narrows and then loop back around.
Construction of the Lions Gate Bridge began on March 31, 1937 and it opened on November 14, 1938. It was designed by Charles Monsarrat and Philip Pratley. The bridge is 1823 metres long and 111 metres high. The bridge might change in the future if they add more lanes of traffic or if the city decides to renovate it to make the bridge better. It might also change if they want to completely destroy the bridge and build a new one.
